NARRATIVE
A ten-a-side match. The Erratics won the toss and elected to field (James Rivington, at this point showing no mercy, to the disgruntlement of some of his team).
It was soon apparent that James had recruited a side that was too strong for the Lilies with a pace attack of Tim Kirkham and Andy Wallace, and Brian Berrigan as first change. The upper order dug in and resisted as best they could, and successfully saw off the slightly wayward Andy. But Tim bowled three of them, and Brian caught another off his own bowling. The batsmen in the Erratics side were worrying that the target wouldnt be big enough to get a proper bat. So James turned to Michael Evans, to help the Lilies along. They gleefully heaved at Michaels dollies but missed, or hit the ball unerringly down Brians throat at square leg, or chipped it tamely to James, thus completely wasting his act of generosity. The sense of outrage that Michael should so easily have picked up a career-best 4 for 16 rippled through the Erratics team. Murray Metcalfe performed the last rites by bowling the tenacious Tristan Ward.
There was a slight hiccup when, in the fifth over with the score on 13, Tim Allan was bowled and Nasir Khawaja was given out lbw by Michael (you can imagine the scene). But Tony Richards and David Miliband put on 54 to take the Erratics to within one big hit of victory. With the first ball of the 23rd over, new bowler Philip Beagon caused a surprise by dismissing David. But with a couple of clean hits, Andy secured the win in the same over.
