NARRATIVE: In his first display of arrogance, James Rivington won the toss and decided to bat, in order to give the Over 40s a chance. He paid the price by becoming the first wicket to fall, in the 4th over. Robert Waller responded belligerently, putting a Jeremy Walker delivery over the boundary; but Jeremy had his revenge to make it 25 for 2. With Richard Heller bowling tightly from one end, Jeremy continued to be the victim of the batsmen’s aggression, as Nasir Khawaja and David Miliband got after him. Nasir had just hit Jeremy for two boundaries when he miscued his next shot, and Jeremy had his second wicket — 70 for 3. Brian Berrigan joined David, and quickly set about the bowling of Chris Dunabin, Patrick Cheney and John Truscott. David hit John for four to bring up the fifty partnership, but three balls later was bowled by him. And in the next over, Patrick trapped Brian — 126 for 5. Unfortunately for the Over 40s, this double success did not signal a collapse, and Mike Long and Tim Allan kept the score ticking over nicely. When Mike was run out with the score on 170, Andy Wallace came in as a handy replacement. In desperation, Richard turned to Michael Evans and Bill Bush. This proved a masterstroke, because Bill immediately wrapped up the innings in the 35th over, thanks to sharp work by Tony Richards behind the stumps. But the Under 40s were quietly contented with their total.

NARRATIVE: Here begins an odd tale ... A passing stranger had been watching the game; he asked if we would like him to umpire, and we agreed. Andy Wallace started bowling with his usual pace and aggression, aided by the vagaries of the pitch. In the 3rd over, Chris Dunabin tried to hook him, missed, was whacked on the head, tottered, and collapsed on to his stumps. Much well-meaning concern, and Chris is escorted to the boundary, blood streaming. An unfortunate way to bring up the first wicket, think the Under 40s. Tony Richards and John Truscott try to put some runs together and have taken the score to 33, when Andy rips through the defences of Tony ... and then Jeremy Walker, first ball. Michael Evans hangs around for a couple of overs before succumbing to Tim Allan. Four gone for 38. In his second display of arrogance, James Rivington brings himself on to bowl, to make a game of it. John and Bill Bush take one look at the bowling of Felix Middleton and, in particular, James and they like what they see. The cafeteria is open and no one is manning the check-out. All of a sudden the hundred is up. Time for some proper bowlers: Brian Berrigan and David Miliband. In his 3rd over, Brian restores order by removing both Bill and John — 122 for 6. But no, who is this coming out to the wicket? ... Chris again. But how can this be? He fell on his stumps. No, no, says Chris, I had completed the shot before I hit the wicket, so I was not out, I merely retired hurt. The Under 40s turn in bemusement to the mysterious umpire. Well, yes, he would have given Chris out hit wicket, but nobody appealed, so Chris technically isn’t out. But of course we didn’t appeal, the stumps were obviously flattened and it would have been callous to shout ‘howzat!’ with a prostrate Chris dripping blood on the pitch. But the protest is in vain and the game resumes, though the mood has now turned a little ugly. The frustration of the Under 40s is reinforced as Richard Heller and Chris proceed to chip away at the target. Nasir Khawaja comes out from behind the stumps to try his spin. It isn’t a success, the fifty partnership is up, and the Over 40s are well on course to win. But Brian is still bowling, and traps Richard — 172, definitely for 6. David comes back and immediately accounts for Jonathan Green — 177 for 7. And in the next over, Brian finally and unarguably shatters the stumps of hero/villain Chris, to give the much relieved Under 40s victory.
