London Erratics Cricket Club

Founded 1974 for recreation and refreshment

Sunday 16 June 2002
London Erratics v Fernhurst
at Fernhurst

A disaster — or a slight improvement?

The start was delayed by the Ireland v Spain World Cup match going into extra time. Even when the game got under way, news of the penalty shoot-out was relayed from the pavilion.
Michael Evans had won the toss and decided to bat — so that he would have something to do after tea, he said. A moderate start got the Erratics to 35 for 2, and then ... disaster! Tony Poulter, David Brook, Mike Long and Tristan Ward all fell with the score stuck on 35; and Bill Bush, who had been responsible for Tristan being run out, guiltily succumbed one run later. Michael hit his mandatory boundary, to lift the score above the WPP total.
With the Erratics only nine strong (is that the right word?), one of the younger members of the Fernhurst side batted for us. But this still wasn’t enough to get the score above that of the 1993 debacle (54). S Melrose finished with figures of 10-5-8-4.

Tony took a wicket with his first ball, and David quickly removed the other opener.
James Rivington took a wicket with his second ball; and in his next over Bill took an excellent catch, running from deepish mid-off to mid-on to hold on to a skier.
The match ended when Jeremy Walker’s third ball was tonked just behind square leg for six.
With the game played and lost before tea, Michael’s desire to have something to do afterwards was satisfied by the playing of a BEER MATCH , which we lost too.
