NARRATIVE
Weather: a short-sleeve jumper day, occasional sun.
The opening Fernhurst attack displayed a good combination of accuracy and movement, to which the Erratics openers responded with solid defence. But soon Brian Berrigan got the measure of the bowling and launched his assault. When he was finally out, the partnership for the first wicket was worth 85 (to which James Rivington had contributed just nine). Tony Poulter carried on the good work, and others chipped in as they could. Mike Long was unlucky to get a poor call from Tony, and Martin Parsley was given out lbw to a ball that he had edged. Michael Evans, who delayed the declaration to get the score well past 200, swung the bat, hitting one big six.
With Felix Meller bowling tightly (his first nine overs went for 10 runs), it looked unlikely that Fernhurst would chase the target. As well as bowling one batsman, Felix ran out another backing up (they had already exchanged words). When a Chris Dunabin long hop induced a small boy to smash the ball into James’ midriff at silly cover, only one result seemed possible. The Fernhurst batsmen had other ideas, and as Michael Evans mixed up the bowling, they set about scoring the 10 runs an over that they needed. Even the introduction of Brian and the return of Felix did not halt the flood of runs, and now the Erratics were jittery. Then Felix bowled the Fernhurst No. 1, finally out for a splendid 81 — bringing to an end a partnership of 124. In the next over, James caught the Ferhurst skipper at deep mid-on for 60, and the new bat was run out through excellent work by Mike Long, who had fielded tigerishly all innings. Even then the danger was not over, as a Fernhurst youth clubbed six more boundaries. But it was not quite enough, and the Erratics had avoided a shock defeat.
