NARRATIVE
Weather: sunny.
Felix Meller and Assad Ulhaq bowled aggressively and unsettled the Shalbourne batsmen. But the second-wicket pair dug in and accumulated runs, partly aided by no-balls and wides (a total of 31 runs were conceded this way in the innings too many!). Shortly after the fifty had come up, the introduction of Brian Berrigan to the attack saw wickets fall. Partnerships of 48 for the fifth wicket and 39 for the seventh were frustrating, with lofted shots eluding the hand. In the penultimate over, Giles Middleton ran someone out with a direct hit, and Assad knocked over the stumps of the obstinate No. 1 batsman, finally out for 77. A challenging target set: just under five an over.
Nasir Khawaja was dropped at the beginning of his innings oops! And Chris Dunabin survived a loud appeal for a catch behind. But the two of them put on 98 for the second wicket. They were aided by two overs of tripe from one of the Shalbourne bowlers, which went for 26 runs and brought the innings up to the right run rate. Michael Evans played the shot of the day a ball exquisitely played off his pads that rocketed to the mid-wicket boundary. Nasir, who had been batting belligerently as usual (including one six), got a bit bogged down towards the end of the innings, and suddenly there were worries that there werent enough runs to let him get to a hundred. At the start of the final over, the Erratics needed two runs to win, Nasir needed three. He hit the first ball hard to long-off, but it didnt quite carry, and on completion of the second run the game ended, leaving Nasir agonisingly stranded on 99. (Attempts by team mates to fiddle the figures were quite correctly resisted by scorer Robert Waller.)
