NARRATIVE
Slow, bumpy outfield. Weather: warm, some sun.
Partnerships of 60 for the first wicket and 48 for the third put the Casuals well on course. Giles Middleton and then Felix Meller showed youthful pace, but had problems with wides and no balls; it was the seasoned pro, Brian Berrigan, who bowled a superb controlled spell, with little justice. The introduction of the spin twins, John Truscott and Michael Evans, induced wickets to fall, but the score mounted Michael in particular having one over too many. Brian and Felix returned to finish off the innings. Giles patrolled the deep excellently, causing a run out and holding two good catches. There were two other run outs, including Max McKays direct hit with one stump to aim at. Jonathan Green kept wicket nobly.
The Erratics innings started reasonably, but Brians dismissal, chipping to square leg immediately after smashing a four, caused a mini collapse. Peter Andrews and John restored some order. But 20 overs into the innings, it became clear that a muscle strain was causing Peter difficulties in playing shots, and he put himself out of his misery (and us out of ours) by retiring. Michael batted entertainingly, on his way to scoring as many as he had conceded in his last over. John and Jonathan seemed content to play for the draw. But with John surprisingly out in the penultimate over, and Giles perishing (first ball) in the next, it was left to Max to see off the final four deliveries (plus the wide called by that witty umpire, Chris Dunabin).
