Our special correspondent writes:
Ten Erratics arrived at Harpsden’s pretty Oxfordshire ground, including father/son combination — Giles and Alex Padmore — playing together for the first time. On another scorching day, the opposition won the toss and, incomprehensively, decided to field through the searing heat.
Jim Head and Tristan Ward felt secure initially, after Jim had edged one through the slips. However, the young, hostile Harpsden attack worked up plenty of pace and bounce, and soon had Tristan caught behind off the gloves. Mike Long looked comfortable without finding the opportunity to attack the bowlers, but a hamstring went, and he retired hurt on 2 (out of 65). Tremayne Rennell (Þ) didn’t have a chance to settle (youth and energy for once outdoing age and experience); and after smacking one for four (and leaving others with style Þ ) Michael Evans was also sent on his way.
At the other end, Jim looks very comfortable, piling up the Erratics’ score with elegant drives and cuts  (Þ) . Can anyone stay with him? Alex Padmore bats orthodoxly, Chris Dunabin less so, and Richard Heller gets himself out with a shot belying his status as president-for-life, but none are able to give the Jim the lasting support he needs. Mike Long (with the help of a runner) and then James Rivington (batting last because of that injured finger) help take the score over the 150 (the minimum deemed acceptable by skipper Tristan), and Jim is last out. Wides are the second highest scorer (29), repeating the large extras contribution two years ago. And that edge through the slips was expensive for the home side.

After a good tea — interrupted by photocalls for the Mayor of Henley, also the Harpsden opening bat — the Erratics took the field to defend their total of 158. Richard’s first couple of overs are tight, but then the wheels come off. At the other end Alex Padmore sets a tight example, and removes the No. 2 to a catch in the covers; and Richard contributes a good LBW shout for the second wicket.
We turn to the spinners, and the captain puts one down in the covers off Jim. He makes up for it by removing the Mayor of Henley (smart work by Tremayne behind the stumps), but at 123 for 3 Harpsden are favourites. Can Chris repeat the bowling performance of yesterday? Alas no, and James’s two catches at mid-off (selflessly risking more finger damage) merely help bring a bit of respectability to the scorecard. The match is lost, with a bye, with 11 of the final 20 overs remaining.
Did the excellent tea (Þ) have something to do with the heavy fielding performance? [TW]
