A 35-overs game. Shalbourne won the toss and elected to field.
The established Erratics batsmen demonstrated that batting was not easy. Peter Andrews was LBW to a ball various people thought he had hit. When James Rivington skied one back over the bowler’s head, he was unlucky to fall to a running, juggling catch. In his first match since August 2003, Brian Berrigan was looking well set when he was hit somewhere delicate and had to retire hurt. (On the fifth ball of that over, the bowler’s knee gave way, and he had to hobble off — so it was a very long over.) Mike Long proved not nearly quick enough to survive John Truscott’s call for a quick single off a misfield. When Brian had stopped massaging his privates, he added only one more run before having a wild swish.
Teenagers Tim Green (Þ) and Alex Padmore had been hidden down the order where they couldn’t get into any trouble. They now hit the ball lustily, putting together the highest stand of the innings — until Alex chipped the ball to sub fielder Simon Green.

With Nasir Khawaja out for the season with a buggered cruciate, Jonathan Green nobly took the gloves — very competently.
Alex Towers steamed in impressively (Þ) , and Matthew Eltringham started with a maiden. And Chris Dunabin was fielding tigerishly. But runs began to come, so the skipper turned to John — with instant success (Þ) . Matthew’s bowling was beginning to suffer, but he induced a false stroke with his last ball.
That was the high point. With the Shalbourne No. 1 batting frustratingly well (again!), youngsters Tim and Alex P couldn’t break through. Brian showed that he could still put it right on the spot. But with only two runs needed, the skipper came on to administer the last rites efficiently.
After the match, Simon Green received the award for the Champagne Moment of 2004, at the very spot on the long-on boundary where he had taken his amazing one-handed catch (Þ) .
