London Erratics Cricket Club

Founded 1974 for recreation and refreshment

Sunday 31 August 2003
London Erratics v Charlbury
at Charlbury

I have seen the future — and it wasn’t the Erratics

Peter Andrews had his thumb broken by a short ball the previous day, so was only able to umpire; the Erratics therefore only fielded ten men (when they had all arrived). The Erratics won the toss and elected to field.
Stand-in skipper James Rivington dropped the No. 2 off Michael Stephenson, but David Brook got him caught behind before he could add to his total. Was that going to be a lucky sign? No. For the second year running, the young Charlbury batsmen had the Erratics fielders chasing their tails.

James sat back and admired as Matthew Neal put most of the hard work into their opening fifty stand. This initial platform was probably not quite quick enough for an assault on the target, but it should have ensured the draw — when 20 overs was called, only one wicket was down.
Matthew perished immediately having a swish (4, 4, 4, out). The loss of two wickets in the 25th over was a further blow. And when another three wickets fell in the 28th/29th overs, the Erratics were left with seven overs to block out. Chris Dunabin and John Booth dead batted for five overs, but weren’t quite tenacious enough.
