London Erratics v Great Milton
at Great Milton

Adventurous spirit almost rewarded

Weather: sunny and hot. Skipper Bill Bush won the toss, looked at the strength of his team on paper, and made the bold decision to bat.
The season’s first fifty opening partnership got the Erratics off to an excellent start — though in truth James Rivington had already been dropped four times before the keeper held on to one. John Truscott looked comfortably on the way to a personal half century, when he too snicked one behind.
Time for the young generation to show its mettle. Felix Meller played some spanking shots, until he mistimed one. Meanwhile Matthew Neal was producing possibly his best innings (and highest score) for the Erratics.
Nasir Khawaja further justified the skipper’s decision to bat by punching a fine 69 not out in 56 minutes.

A wicket in the first over was encouraging, but the home batsmen responded well against the opening attack of Michael Stephenson and debutant Tristan Pascoe.
Matthew Eltringham took four wickets in successive overs. James Rivington usefully removed a big hitter before he got started. The next bat was a small boy; when James tried to bowl a gentle lob, it floated embarrassingly wide; and when he fizzed the next one down and flattened the stumps, he received abuse from his team mates — you can’t win.
The Erratics should have been able to take the last two wickets in the twelve overs that remained. But the ninth wicket pair happily swatted away at whatever bowling skipper Bill threw at them, and we had to make do with a draw.
