London Erratics v Fernhurst
at Fernhurst

Old men in a hurry

An Erratics team containing seven players over 50 (and only one below 40) assembled to do battle on a baking hot day. The Erratics won the toss and elected to field.
David Brook and Jeremy Walker bowled with great control (and no luck), so that after ten overs the score had crawled to just 17. Richard Heller bowled three tidy overs, but his achilles problem erupted again, and he had to hobble off. Matthew Neal had a wild first over, then sorted himself out and picked up the first wicket, caught at midwicket.
Off the first 26 overs, the Fernhurst batsmen scored at a modest 3 runs an over. Now they began to take advantage of the later bowlers, and suddenly the flagging fielders were retrieving the ball from all quarters. Even John Truscott, who did a good job keeping one end tight, eventually suffered — his last over going for 19. The run rate in the last 17 overs was a brutal 8.5, and the Erratics were mightily relieved to get off the field at tea.

After a measured start to the innings, Matthew briskly got the run rate up to four an over, before being caught behind. Chris Dunabin, after at least one failed attempt, then succeeded in getting himself run out.
Tony Poulter joined John to launch an assault on the Fernhurst total. It was particularly enjoyable to see them ruining the bowling figures of the Fernhurst centurion, though in the end he accounted for Tony. The Fernhurst keeper now swapped roles, and did damage by claiming three wickets (continuing James Rivington’s poor run of form).
But David and Jeremy attacked the bowling, and now Fernhurst were looking uneasy as the Erratics pair put in some big overs. However, it wasn’t to be: 22 off the last over was an impossible target — though Jeremy nobly perished in the attempt.
